   PROJECT 3

INHABIT
For Project 3, students each have use of a small gallery space on the second floor of the Ivan Wilson Fine Arts Center for a week. Every week we end their time with a critique, and the space is passed to the next student. The space measures 16' long by 8' tall and just under 3' deep. It is fronted by a 3-paned sliding glass door.

First up: Haley Valentine

Haley loads the drawing machine.

Drawing machine in action. (See it dripping?)

  1. I think that this piece would be interesting to see in action as a video. Even if the process takes a long time (depending on the viscosity of the material) a video that could be sped up would enhance how I experience the piece as someone outside of the gallery space. I am interested to know if there was a specific reason for the chosen colors and if anything was done with the drawings afterwards. Were they hung in the gallery as they were finished? Were there new drawings every day? Did the colors ever change? I like the idea of a drawing machine, but would like to see an artist statement to better understand the concept that the artist began with.

    1. The reason there is no video is because it didn't really work. I wanted the ink to run like a waterfall, but it got clogged. :( I chose blue and yellow because I wanted them to run down and meet in the middle to make green. Green is my favorite color.
The drip canvases were not hung in the gallery after, but they are hanging in my apartment. I only used the two colors seen in the pictures. It was only meant to run on the day that the class viewed it.
I didn't mean it to be a machine that makes drawings, more like something that represents a scientific experiment, because I also work in a chem lab on campus.
I guess I did forget to include my artist statement. If I remember correctly, I talked about how when I work as an artist, I don't really have a process, so I wanted to create one.
