SPRING 2015! It's a new season of installation art projects!
Project 1: You Have To Use String
Assignment: USING ONLY STRING, make an installation in or around FAC.
[This is a fast project, completed within the second full week of classes, designed to get folks thinking, making and moving.]
Walk around in and outside of FAC. What spaces could be activated? What spaces are interesting?
Consider your piece from a FORMAL (what the thing looks like), CONCEPTUAL (what the thing means) and MATERIAL (what the thing is made of) angle. Do you choose to activate one, two or all three of these areas with your work?
More things to get you thinking:
MATERIALS:
What IS string? What is the “stringness” of string? IE: Is there an inherent meaning in your material? Could there be many meanings, depending upon how it is used? Does your material naturally invoke other associations? Will you work with or against inherent or implied meaning? What is cheap? What is found? What is abundant? What do you already have?
MANIPULATION:
How might you manipulate or not manipulate your material? How could you organize your material or organize your space WITH the material? What about multiples? Could you make larger forms out of smaller? What about scale? Are you a minimalist or a maximalist? Remember: the fewer materials or actions – the more precise, perfect, necessary they must be!
SITE SPECIFICITY:
What are the “meanings” your site already possesses? Is it loaded? Will you choose to amplify, question, speak to or ignore your site’s inherent “meaning?” How do your materials relate to your site? Do they? Does it matter? How will the viewer navigate / view your work? Is it frontal? Do they walk inside? Within? Do they change it when they view it – purposely or unintentionally?
