Allison Salmon, "Diversity," nylons, Plexiglas containers

Artist statement: I am focusing on the idea of diversity and race. Often there are those that don't fit "in the box."

  1. Some of my favorite comments.
1)Its taking a large gallery space, an shrinking it, into multiple small isolated galleries that both shoe off there contents while hiding their core.
2)Are you on display? Does skin tone put us in boxes?
3)The idea of being pushed into a stereotypical box.

  2. Clean way to present your concept! That being said, it may have taken me a while to come up to your intent without your statement. I can't help but get caught on the far right box due to its visual difference. Perhaps there is another way to display the "don't fit" box or the contents of it that could depict how those individuals feel. Maybe the multicolored pantyhose create an unsure check mark above one of the middle boxes or are displayed in a fashion outside of the box since there isn't a distinct box within which they fit.

  3. I got your concept even without reading your statement. This is a clean simple way to get this message across without becoming cliché. The last box of the mixed colors might read differently if you placed it else where. Like maybe it is above them or turned different like its trying to fit in to this line of colors that it does not fit in to. Just a thought.
