Andrea Stith, "Untitled," satin, thread

Artist statement: I chose to install my work on the "kissing bridge," in a space that is normally associated with positive romantic experiences on our campus. I wanted to bring attention to the fact that all relationships aren't rainbows and unicorns, that hearts are broken and bruised, but then heal and mend. I am bringing the Kissing Bridge down from its pedestal, I am calling it out in a way.

  1. I am a hopeless romantic at heart but in the real world love is work, and hardships and giving and taking and it is nothing like what we see in the movies. I appreciate this art piece because it so true. How many times in our life will we experience both the wondrous joy of love but also the crippling heartbreak?

  2. My favorite comments on this piece during critique were:

"Makes me question if I've ever known what love is."

"The people who kiss here may not be married but have broken hearts."

"The placement makes me feel as though I'm walking under a medieval times bridge with like a banner placed."

    "Refuses to give up."

Thank you everyone for the comments.
