Gabby Kempter, "Peace Tree," balloons, string, tree
These shots show three different times of day on Monday, as the balloons started to pop, lose air, and escape.
Artist statement: I wanted to create a peaceful space, a space under the tree for someone to sit under, look up, and see color, light, and feel the balloons move with the wind.
I understand your intention and think it's a great way to find a little solace in a busy world. It is nice to see the progression of days and the materials reacting to each other. Did you think about altering the form of the balloon and just using it as a material? Because balloons, when stretched, have the ability to allow light to come through; did you think about cutting them into a planer medium (Almost using it like fabric) and stretching them from branch to branch to create a translucent ceiling. However I don't know if you would have gotten the aging effect if you did it that way. Conception is good but try experimenting. with materials.
ReplyDeleteI would agree with Elizabeth, your intention of this piece is well thought. There's nothing more overwhelming than competing with nature, so I would second the material exploration but also encourage really pushing the multiples. The time lapse documentation of this piece is a nice addition.
