Jenna Hall, "Earth Mound," clay, wire, wood

Artist statement: I wanted to create a cave-like space, and show people the cave-like nature of the space they already inhabited.

  1. My first impression of this piece was the elegance it possessed. Through the varying levels of the surface it appears through the pictures similar to folds in a thick luscious fabric. The color is also so earthy and rich, it really lends to the beauty of this piece. But I am most interested in the ephemeral aspects of this piece. I am curious to know how long you left it up? I find myself wanting to know if it slumped, dried out, got rained on, was the interior structure revealed, etc., I'm just really curious as to nature's part in this piece, or if it was very temporary and nature didn't play a part at all.

    1. My favorite comments from critique were:
I like seeing your hand in this piece, like the thumb prints as you created it. I know you meant for it to be cave like, but I like how it plays with the concrete poles holding up the bridge.

I can appreciate how much time this must have taken you. The form is really nice. The fountain in the background lets me make believe that I am a child for a few moments.

    2. The piece was left up for almost a week. Over that period of time it began to dry and crack. The internal structure of the object was built from chicken wire and wood. The chicken wire began to appear through the cracking clay. It was rained on at one point and I had to move it so that the clay did not seep from the form and clog the drain. Nature changed the form greatly. I recycled/ reclaimed all of the clay from the piece for future projects, the dry clay crumbled off the form.
