Andrea Stith; "Shattered Glass;" Recycled glass and glass containers

This piece was inspired by the glass found in the parking lots on campus. I wanted to represent the trashy nature of glass in a beautiful way. I was distraught by the shattered glass that I saw in the parking lot every morning as I arrived at the university. I wanted to do something with this dangerous trash. I displayed it in multiple cylinders to represent the different parking lots on campus. These broken beer and wine bottles of various colors also represent the different taste and preferences people have. It is amazing to me that some people get away with disrespecting public space so often but nothing is ever done or said about it. I wanted to bring attention to this seemingly insignificant problem on campus without harshly attacking it. This piece may just be visually appealing to some but as the artist it means more than meets the eye.

  1. The comments that I really enjoyed during critique in class were:
"The colors of your piece blend with the colors of the area."

"Your piece overall is very calming even though there is chaos of the broken glass inside the vase."

    "YAY GLASS"

"Would have never thought of using this space, quite frankly never noticed it, but it makes a neat sort of pedestal for the cylinders."

" I think it's interesting that you talk about the misuse of public space during an installation."

Thank you all for the feedback. I am sorry to inform everyone that this piece suffered some damage over the weekend. Someone decided to throw two of the tall cylinders and one small cylinder over the wall into the parking lot. I see this as just proving my point more as to how disrespectful people can be to public space.

  2. The colors of the glass reacts well with the environment, especially because of the rainy weather. I feel like the people who disrupted the installation actually had a part within the installation. They destroyed destruction itself.

  3. Such an issue that no one thinks of.Found glass can also be a sort of pretty thing at times too, like when you find it one the beach and its all smoothed down from the sand. However in this space its destructive in a way.Way to go girl scout.:)

  4. This piece is so visually interesting to me. At first it looked like the pieces were suspended in ice, but I quickly realized otherwise(kind of random). But the pieces are very beautiful. On a different note, I thought it was really interesting that people left the glass around this area, and you in turn left your own glass as well but made something greater of it. It's an interesting idea. Taking what was there and bettering it, while also adding to it. But I was worried, did people end up break your glass as well? And if they did, how did that change your personal thoughts about your piece?

    1. Yes they did end up breaking some of the cylinders in the parking lot right over the wall behind the piece. Honestly it just proved my point that people are so disrespectful of public space. We pay to go to school here yet half of the student body doesn't seem to respect the campus. As an artist in this installation class having art destroyed has brought this idea to my mind more. I feel like them destroying my work only helped my piece since essentially they did exactly what I was drawing light to. I was upset that it happened because I did love the way it looked and wanted to display it in other locations as well but this is something that can happen any time we place a piece in public space. I have learned that certain people on our campus are not huge fans of art and that is their choice.
