Haley Valentine; "Paper;" Newspaper and printer paper on contact paper

We use paper every day. We write on it, draw on it, and print out assignments on it. But how often do we remember that paper was once a tree? It was once a living thing, now flattened into an everyday writing surface. I wanted to explore how difficult it would be to return paper to its tree form.

  1. My favorite part of this is that you did the four seasons. I wish there were more and as a tree nerd love the concept. Good job.

  2. I think it would be neat to see the paper turned back into trees. Or what about the idea of saving paper by emailing things or using more of online things rather then paper. Could you maybe make digital trees or something like that. I think this idea could really turn into something . The idea of how our world is so quickly shifting to everything digital where there is less paper being used for things such as books.

  3. "I wanted to explore how difficult it would be to return paper to its tree form." This part of your statement really stood out for me. I can see that you took paper and made it into a 2D tree, but I wonder if you thought about making a 3D tree(even just a sapling) using paper. I wonder this because you would literally be experiencing the difficulty of taking paper and putting it back into the actual form of a tree. I think the concept is great, and think it would be interesting to push that even further.

    1. The paper is rolled up and pasted onto paper, so its sort of 3D. Kristina did suggest molding the paper into trees that I could tie to the trees, but I'm mostly a 2D artist and I wasn't able to get them to do that when I tried it out. I'm a pretty bad 3D artist. The newspaper was fun to work with, though, and I think if I get the time it would be fun to explore as well. Thanks for your comment!

  4. I really enjoy this piece conceptually. I think that the flatness of the tree forms that you made pushes the idea that we are taking something so beautiful and full that is essential to our survival and turning it in to something flat and lifeless. Did you want to discuss the idea that we are ignoring the value or trees, or simply that it cannot be undone once a tree is turned in to paper?

    1. You're pretty much dead on! I wanted to address the idea that we ignore the value of trees.
