Artist Statement
“untitled”
This project was inspired by
problems brought to my attention by the office of sustainability. They were
looking at how many homeless people exist and how hard it is for them to get
back on their feet. [The artist] Banksy’s inspired figures automatically popped
into my head and I drew on those to create a more elaborate piece. I also
changed my usual way of working on art to feel closer to the project. Normally
I would go buy my supplies and have a precise plan of how to execute it. For
this project I only used recycled cardboard and any remaining art supplies I
had left over from past projects to represent how often these people are left
fending for all they have each day. I also developed the large shadowing
figures to represent the many problems that all homeless face when trying to
find a way out of their situation. I hope this piece can allow people to
realize that our homeless are important and should not be forgotten.
I really love the chalk drawings and how they add just a bit of color to this piece.
ReplyDeleteThis project allowed me to grow alot a artist and I was happy to create something with such a powerful cause behind it. I look forward to helping the office of sustainability again. Thank you for reminding me how important artist are to the world.
ReplyDeleteGreat work. There was a time that I was homeless. It is one of those things that you believe will never happen to you. It can be very hard to get back on your feet once you have lost everything. You also lose your motivation. I like this piece because it shows the aloneness one experiences as a result of being homeless. Society condemns and rejects the homeless and places very harsh judgments on them. I like that you chose to use only left over supplies because that it sepaks volumes about how the homeless have to work with scrapes and scavenge to survive.
