PROJECT 5
FINAL PROJECT
Kyle Obrock; stills from 1990; materials: televisions, DVD players, four digital video loops with sound, remixed from VCR tape originals
My work is about documenting identities and incorporating the use of photography and installation art along with print media. I wanted to explore my identity and how I identified myself over the years. Growing up, I knew I was apart of a loving family but also knew I was physically different. I once said, "Mom, my eyes are brown and your eyes are brown so we look alike, and Dad and Erin look alike." I knew I was always different from the rest of my family and I wanted to illustrate my feeling I had when I was younger. Looking at my family disrupts the views of a typical American family. In my work, I wanted to embrace my feelings and use my feelings as a tool to create my works of art.

I really enjoy this piece and the movement from t.v. to t.v. is very neat and i think that is needed to move from one to the other. Like telling bits of a story you move from page to page from chapter to chapter, but in this case it is from t.v. from t.v.
ReplyDeleteThis piece was really awesome. It was clear there was thought put into every detail and overall created a very interesting a vulnerable piece.
ReplyDeleteThis piece was my favorite of yours all year. It was so sweet and you can tell that there was some major time put in. Remind me of your brain popping up a memory then that memory triggering another one.
ReplyDeleteI found this piece interesting because of how "normal" many of the video clips appeared, they could have been any aged clips from any family video. Then the interspersed clips of you coming to your family in the airport and your adoption day celebration, they remind viewers of how normal can be so truly different for every one. The nostalgia that comes across through the use of the tube televisions, rotations of video among the different televisions and the small intimate video projections on the screens all draw viewer interest and keep us engaged throughout the length of the video.
