Project 3: Bonil
Laura Klat; Sheeno Rankin; Charles Martinez; Millie Walt; Amelia Wilson

A coffin is a loaded symbol that holds feelings such as suppression of regrets, life and death. Even a sense of ritualistic death by social media can be implied, as illustrated in this work by “me gusta” or “like” Facebook stickers. Social platforms like Facebook are a simple pastime for most people; but a pastime can easily become habit. Sometimes we find ourselves living vicariously through Facebook and other social media ultimately losing track of reality, how to feel and how to experience the world for oneself. A “metaphoric death” occurs. For a more positive spin, Bonil’s work can also be seen as death to an “oppressor” by the voices of his people via social media. It is also important to realize that initial meaning can greatly shift based upon context, such as geographical location and the personal experiences or observations of who or what is being displayed.
