Music has
always played an immense role in my life. From a young age, I performed,
whether it was dancing, gymnastics, choir, or playing guitar, it seemed that
music constantly found a way into my life. Since then, I’ve focused this
musical interest primarily toward singing alone, while also playing a couple
instruments—guitar and ukulele. I’m still very intrigued by the role that music
has in my life and in the life of others and I’m always surprised by the vast
impact lyrics can have on the mind.
Before this
installation, I knew that I wanted to utilize flowers, because to me, they are
another material in my toolbox; I do not separate flowers from my paints or
clay. I’ll Follow You Into the Dark (originally written and performed by Death
Cab for Cutie) peaked my interest lyrically because of its simplicity in
describing life and death, a topic that I think about quite often. By
revisiting the meaning of these lyrics, I meshed together two ideas: the life
and death of humans, and the life and death of flowers.
On a very
basic level, flowers and humans are extremely similar: we are both conceived; we
grow, pollinate, live, and die. However, humans lead an intelligent life. We
listen, learn, love, and leave legacies. In this video installation, I explore
this relationship. I seek to portray the many ways in which humans interact
with flowers and the remarkable effects that flowers have on human lives, even
if they are seemingly futile. Flowers have a charming aura that allows us to
connect with them. Our similarities of life and death create a perpetually
intriguing bond.
