HeforShe is an activist movement started by the United Nations Women to encourage men to be involved in the struggle for gender equality all over the world. Many males have deemed feminism, in the most recent applications, as “man-hating.” By definition, the word feminism is, “the belief that men and women should have equal rights and opportunities.” HeforShe is lead in part by actress and activist, but most importantly, UN Women Global Goodwill Ambassador, Emma Watson. She strongly suggests that feminism should be employed by both genders to reach some sort of new standard of equality. Feminine and masculine characteristics lie in both men and women, and it is important to understand that as a human being, you are allowed to hold any amount of either of these characteristics. Biology does not determine your societal standing in the world, and the consequences of the gender imbalance are dire. Violence, including abuse and rape, pay gap, and lack of access to education are all a result of an androcentric society that biology has lent a hand in forming. HeforShe hopes to garner the support of males in the hopes of spreading awareness of the consequences of gender inequality.
If females and males are to live together successfully, we must support one another in every aspect, and live as equals.
